What is Bonding?

I need bonding” is a phrase that I hear very often in my office.

Bonding is a technique that all dentists use to “fix”, resurface or repair teeth .  The technique has been improved over the years to the point that many repairs are difficult to notice and the teeth look great.

Bonding can be used to fix defects in the enamel, repair cavities, change the shape of malformed teeth, close gaps between teeth, splint teeth together for strength protect teeth from cavities, and several other things.

Many years ago,  in an effort to show people what could be done with bonding, I made the following video clip.  Please understand that it is only a brief introduction to bonding and it is not all-inclusive or comprehensive in its contents.

After the video, I will go over the advantages and disadvantages of bonding.

Okay, so the advantages of bonding are:

1-      It is conservative (saves tooth structure)

2-      Looks good

3-      Usually the least expensive alternative

Disadvantages are:

1-      The material may discolor or stain over the years

2-      May not last a long time if subjected to chewing and grinding forces.

That’s it for my brief explanation on bonding. I hope it has been informative and please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions.
